Who Started the Rally Cap?
October 12, 1986 Anaheim stadium. The Boston Red Sox have their backs against the wall down three to one in the series to California. The Duke and Ty were down the right field line by the foul pole maybe 20 rows back. They are sitting with a whole bunch of Boston fans. We can only tell you what happened and you can be the judge. With Boston’s backs against the wall Richy Gedman comes up to the plate and Duke stands up in the midst of everybody, takes his hat, and punches it inside out. Boston fans were irate and yelling at him for a few moments until the Duke screamed out I’m turning this thing around!! After a few more moments Boston fans started turning their hats inside out. Richy G then proceeded to deposit a pitch into the right field stands. This is the famous game where where the Angels came within one strike of going to the World Series but Donnie Moore threw Dave Henderson a fork ball and he deposited it in the stands for a home run to take the lead in the game. The Red Sox went on to win the game and the next two in Boston to take the series. The tragedy of it all is people think including players and sports casters that is why Donnie Moore committed suicide On July 18th 1989.
The rally cap is said to have started in the New York Mets Red Sox series as far as people know. We can only tell you what happened in Anaheim. Why were people yelling at the Duke for what he was doing. We have no clue except the story. Sometimes idiots get a ball rolling.
